Late July Photo Worth A Few Words

A trip through some light history...

This is a shot from a year ago at Northern Maine Jct. For the uninitiated, that's actually Hermon, Maine and it used to be an important junction between the Bangor and Aroostook RR (BAR) and the Maine Central RR (MEC). Nowadays, it hosts only the remnants of their successors. With all this as a backdrop, that underpass tunnel in front of 334 remains an undaunted constant. While all else around it gradually disappears or falls into disuse like the rusting coaling tower just out of view, this item remains. It could be that it fills with water when it rains, or it's just easier to go around nowadays, but I find it interesting that it hasn't been bulldozed yet and at least appears to be functional.

This used to be one heck of a busy spot. The 334 is sitting on the old Maine Central tracks in front of the old BAR station building. Trains could be parked here for hours at a time with others passing on the adjacent tracks all day long. Danger alone made this underpass very useful in the past. The remnants of the passenger platforms surround the doorway. I recall having seen the old gooseneck lights on poles poking out of those platforms too, but they are long gone now. Passenger trains down from Bangor or up from Portland stopped here. When both lines combined efforts to move potatoes, this place would be in constant motion with those famous red, white and blue cars of "State of Maine Products" along with the insulated cars of other big produce shippers flowing through during the peak of season.

I made my first pilgrimage to NMJ in 1975. My grandfather knew just where to go even though he wasn't a railfan, a sign of the place's economic importance. I walked into their then new office building and talked to a receptionist who simply gave me a release to fill out. Too bad I didn't know about the Derby Shops, Oakfield, Millinocket or Squa Pan back then because she was quite surprised that I only wanted to see NMJ. The release gave me nearly free reign except for climbing in or on things. One of those very releases is tacked up next to my home computer today as a memento. So on that first visit I wandered around and got pictures of F3's, BL2's, Geeps, cabooses, and most anything else the BAR was known for in the railfan world that used to be kept around the extensive shops, yard and other facilities there. What a dream trip, which I repeated about 3 times in the next 12 years. And yes, I had still missed out on Derby when the "releases" were stopped. That 1975 trip was my first encounter with the underpass tunnel. A Maine Central train blocked the tracks so I went under. Nothing special but those unique BAR cabooses were on the other side. It wasn't much of an experience at the time but the strange shape and odd rural location crept into my photos and somehow left an impression later.

Today the BAR is nearly gone. The turntable was removed a couple of years ago, most of the shop facilities and tracks are derelict but the yards seem to be active with some MMA traffic as well as new shipper facilities. The Searsport line is still active though not daily, but there is hope for the future port business. The Maine Central was never huge here but this is now the northern outpost of the Pan Am empire. Trains to Bucksport, Old Town and Mattawamkeag radiate from here these days since the large Bangor Yard was erased. Only one daily train in and out to the west is all that is left. As mills close, even this presence by Pan Am and MMA will shrink further. Both lines are hurting in this part of the world.

See what happens to the imagination when focused somewhere other than the locomotive. Anyway, those of you who still want to see the old BAR and MEC locomotives and rolling stock (including those red, white and blue box cars) check out the photo gallery here at Larry Goss's fine site if you haven't already (or go back if you haven't in a while). You'll be glad you did. It was listed in Wikipedia too.

The Changing Face of Pan Am Railways...

It seems that the times we have all dreamed of are finally upon us. Big Brother Norfolk Southern is moving into New England and the Guilford corporate image is slowly but surely dissolving. However we did take a trip down this road about three years ago when Pan Am Repainted two ex-CN GP40-2w's in its new "Pan Am" paint scheme. This sparked a lot of discussion about equipment being repainted and major changes but only resulted in nothing more than a facelift on two units. However this past winter repainting started again with two Snow plows (Much needed). After this we saw the beginning of the new "Dark Future". The first pictures of the 506 we released on an overcast and gray day. It could indeed be a dark future. Of course all indications are that the future of the railroad can only improve but as we have learned from this company in years past, things aren't always as they seem. Now two months after the big announcement, Pan Am has started to spread its corporate image. It is possible that we are witnessing the end of the 25 year Guilford regime. Now we see Pan Am, a globally recognized brand, on trucks, locomotives, and even buildings. It is indeed exciting times ahead for the railroad.

Thats all for now folks!

A brief Introduction

Hello everyone! I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you all. It's funny because I've been actively railfanning my entire life, especially most recently when I got my own wheels but In all these years however I have yet to encounter an H.A.P.T. member. That is until last week. My story beings many years ago with my youngest fondest memories include driving through Waterville yard or Rigby. My Father had many contacts in the railroad and was always cruising through yards with my mother, sister and myself. One of my earliest memories is a Maine Central U18B in the Waterville deadline. The only Maine Central unit I would ever see. But anyways back to my life, I grew up in North Yarmouth on Sligo road. I'm sure many of you are familiar with the road because it crosses both the Brunswick branch, the back road and comes very close to the SLR/CN to Portland. It was a good youth being able to run up the road to the overpass and watch trains cruise by. This youth however did not last because in 1998 I moved to Oxford Hills. However this didn't diminish my railfanning a bit. In fact it grew much more. In the summer of 98 I lived in Bethel on mainstreet with my grandmother. This same year the SLR and CN signed in on a dedicated intermodal train. These trains were powered by any sort of CN power that ran across Canada. I remember seeing SD's cruise by the new station at 7 or 8 at night. The move to Oxford Hills brought the SLR into my life. I also met the great Sid Gordon. Sid and my Father would hang out quite a bit and model trains together or go railfanning. Now for a bit of fast forwarding to my senior year of High School. After Football ended and Track was done I decided it was time to stretch my legs and embark on my own railfan adventures. Danville junction was the place of choice. I spent many a hot summers day in Danville when I wasn't working at the New Balance Factory Store (Rt. 26 in Oxford) where I still work today. The Summer had some great catches and was the beginning of an even better fall. The fall of 07 was my first year at the University of Maine at Orono. Studying Communications and Business, I started down my path towards higher education. Of course I couldn't resist but go to Northern Maine Junction. So to yet again fast forward here I am back in the Hills for a summer working at New Balance and watching trains. Like I said I'm surprised I haven't met any H.A.P.T. members before but now that I have met both Brad and Billy I am glad to have met these guys! I am also glad to say that I will be hanging out with these guys a lot more down the road! I look forward to posting my findings to you all and I really enjoy the work that is already produced here!

My name is Charles Hastings and I am an 18 year old Rail Fanatic.

Addendum to Bill's Day 3 "Hot Times"

Here are a few photos from the trip that Billy described in his last post.

.
The first unit of note was the ex-BN "whiteface" #5078 attached to the remote caboose doing the chores in the yard. Obviously the nickname applies to only one end.

The ex-CR #2000 was sitting just a bit south on the road bridge with a train waiting to get into the yard (right).
.
.
.
.
.
It was 8569 in the MMA paint that we chased from Millinocket to S. Lagrange. Now that was pretty cool after years of chasing unrepainted power. Even locals don't get that all the time, so Billy brought us some luck. Unfortunately, with MMA's operations shrinking all the time with mill curtailments, the units that are retained and running will be seen more often since the odds of catching any one unit improve.
.
.
.
This first shot (left) of 8569 is well inside Millinocket yard. The next shot (right) is near the chip loader in S. Lagrange.
.
.

It's been fun to have Bill around for his annual Maine visit! He brought plenty of good luck with him as usual. Most of HAPT got the opportunity to hang out with him at some point and I sure enjoyed covering half the state to find these gems.

Bill's Excellent Adventures / Summit Day 2

My turn to write according to Billy;

We started off with a simple trip along the old Lewiston Lower branch to scout relics. Slowly but surely, things are disappearing on the old branch. The Crowley Jct. wye is almost impossible to find now. More bits of siding in Lewiston and Lisbon are gone.

We made a trip straight up Route 1 to Rockland to see the Maine Eastern. The morning run to Rockland was long gone and did beat us to the depot. By the time we got there the train had backed up to the runaround. We got to watch the FL9 uncouple and progress to the roundhouse around the train. The train wasn't leaving for a couple of hours so we decided to see what we could and head out. After lunch at Amato's we saw the now turned FL9 reconnect to the train and sit out the wait. We toured the Atlantic branch where Dragon Cement loads on to barges (not much to see from the road) and left town.

The next stop was Waterville after a whole lot of non-rail countryside. Once we reconnected with the Lower Road north of Augusta we assumed things would improve. However, without a scanner (doah!) we were out of luck. Absolutely nothing around other than a distant glimpse of an old faded unit near the shops. Lots of open track to see units - if they were there to be seen! Same thing was true with the main all the way to Leeds Jct. Nothing but empty tracks. Skunked!

Things got more exciting as we approached Leeds Jct. though. After detouring because of a traffic accident near our turn, we again got skunked at the junction - at first. Headed back to Lewiston we decided to go over to College Ave. and that's when we we caught our eastbound. It turned out to be a winner too. Two kinds of Pan Am on the point. 505 with the older blue and gray, plus the "rumored to be painted" 307 in the newer dark blue Pan Am paint trailing. It was deja vu all over again. Last night we caught nearly the same thing (511 & 506) westbound at Fairgrounds. The crews even had the front door open for us both times. Our current train turned out to be a Rumford job (coal cars) and stopped at the signals at Leeds Jct. We followed it and got some close up shots there. It was around 6:30 pm +/-. Billy was on the phone to the W.F.P.T. to get someone to post confirmation of the paint scheme on 307 (that might make this a "news exclusive" of sorts). A couple of other railfans were about at Leeds but Billy had the cell phone to leap ahead of the game!

Before we could leave we saw a westbound waiting for the Rumford job to clear. It turned out to be 373, 353 and 621, potentially NMED or WAED. Not bad. We got our meet at Leeds Jct. but it wasn't fancy like the folks from Pennsylvania tend to see. We later saw this guy go through Danville Jct. after meeting another eastbound at Rumford Jct. at about 8:50 pm. No stats on the eastbound since we were eating a fine dinner at the Fireside Inn's restaurant.

No details but the SLR's 517 (old 393) got their clearance to leave Lewiston Jct. at about 8:50pm. I later caught the end of it in Mechanic Falls as I was heading home at 9:10.

As Billy says: "Till next time railfans";

June Maine Visit

Hello fellow HAPTers!

In seeing Billy Leazer's post I thought I would post my happenings when I visited back at the beginning of June.

I headed up north on 6/7 and of course from PA I have to take I-290 thru Worcester (WOOS-tah! in the local tongue). Being the lunch hour by the time I got there I refreshed at the local Way of the Sub and went over to the old station, known locally at the haunt of the W.F.P.T. to watch some of the local traffic.

Saw Q-116 arrive, drop most of his train, back on to what was left (about 3 spines of CSX containors) and off the Boston he went.

Also caught the WB Lake Shore Ltd. and the 2:00pm MBTA outbound and inbound. Also WB merchandise freight went by just after the Amtrak.

On to Maine....

Stopped at Danville Jct. shrine of the HAPT, and found the temple of Maine's desperate railfans, rather deserted and deliciously quiet. A nice relaxing evening was spent in that area. SLR 515 showed up and with a pair of slugpairs switching. I stayed and watched that for an hour or so and off to fellow HAPTer's Paul Lodge home for some well deserved shuteye (had been up since 3:30am!)

No railfanning until Tuesday, 6/10. Paul Lodge and I went out to catch some of the local action on a warm sunny day. Caught up with 512 at S. Paris and watched him switch New England Public Warehouse, S. Paris and hang out at the S. Paris station!

Followed him down the McFalls where he was held up by some MOW folks so we went in search of more game and hit a Maine jackpot!

4 trains all meeting at the same location!!!!!!!!

At Leeds Jct. EB EDRI was awaiting a recrew at the crossing. In fact the train was just that much TOOO long so they split up the engine pair, putting one unit on the north side of the crossing while the other was attached to the train on the south side of said crossing!

Along come EDNM rumbling thru, then NMED minus train. Seem NMED had 7 cars derail at Waterville so they left the whole train there and proceeded light to Danville Jct. to make the pickup there (and have a reasonable chance of making some destination before recrewing!). Then comes along RIED after recrew shows up. They take train to Rumford Jct. where they will then be taxiied back to Leeds Jct. to take said EDRI with splitting headache to Rumford.

A nice coup!

The fun continues

Thursday 6/12 - Time to head back to PA with some stops along the CSX main heading west towards NY.

Chester NY - saw a WB autorack.

Washington Hill Cut - saw an EB autorack

State Line tunnels.

Saw previously said WB autorack, both directions of Lake Shore Ltd., local freight , 2 EB Merchandise and rumored another train east of tunnels but by that time it was 1800 and I HAD to get home or risk falling asleep on the road.

Good trip!

Next trip next week (7/8 to 7/15)

Hoping to Maine Eastern and I never got a chance when I was living in Maine before.

Happy Railfanning

Welcome to HAPT's Railfan Adventures

The Hebron Any Power Team is actually just a bunch of fun-loving rail enthusiasts who enjoy photographing and chasing all things railroad with friends. This bunch of guys cover a lot of ground for a group based way up "nawth" in Maine. We also have friends scattered around the country who contribute well to our hobby. In fact, our name is derived from our actual friends in the Worcester Foreign Power Team, except that Hebron hasn't seen a train since the 1950's so we'll settle for "any power".

Welcome and enjoy the eclectic collections of the contributors. Maine idealizes "life in the slow lane" so we present this blog as an effort to share our less time sensitive findings and to add to our hobby.
